Funk Excels, Boston Blows Out Rochester
|
The Boston Beaneaters and Rochester Redbirds completed their game despite the inclement weather.
The Boston Beaneaters defeated the Rochester Redbirds, 13-2, in Gehrig League action at South End Grounds. Derek Funk received player of the game honors. The 16-year veteran was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 3 runs and drove in 4. Juan Díaz earned the win for Boston. He lasted 5.2 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits, while striking out 3. With the win, he raised his record to 9-5.
Funk contributed a big hit, a 2-run single, for Boston in the bottom of the third. With his team trailing 1-0, Funk took a fastball from Bob Harmon and stroked the single to center. His 142nd hit of the season allowed the Beaneaters to leap in front, 2-1.
"We didn't put up much resistance," said losing manager Sergio Wilson.
Boston is now riding a 3-game win streak.
