Late Rally by Spiders Secures Win
|
Rochester got a terrific performance from pitcher Matt Shaw, but it wasn't enough to beat the Cleveland Spiders. Cleveland won the Rochester Stadium contest, 6-4. Shaw was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings of 5-hit ball. Cleveland reliever Júlio Pagán picked up the win to move to 3-3. Tsugiharu Fujii suffered the loss. Ricardo Reyes, credited with the save, is now 18 for 24 in save opportunities.
Morihiro Nomura's hit in the top of the ninth was a game-changer. With two out, he rapped a changeup from Brent Singleton for a 2-run double. It put Cleveland in front, 6-4.
"Glad to get this win," said Nomura. "But we need to keep playing at a high level."
The Spiders, at 41-71, sit in last place in the Division 1.
