Thompson Impresses in Houston Loss
|
Houston got a terrific performance from center fielder Matt Thompson, but it wasn't enough to beat the Boston Beaneaters. Boston won the South End Grounds contest, 5-4. Thompson was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He went 3 for 3 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Will White picked up the save for Boston, his 1st of the year. Boston, now 2-1, has played well in the early going.
The Beaneaters got a big at-bat from first baseman Derek Funk. For the game, Funk was 2 for 5 with 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs. In the bottom of the eighth, with the bases loaded, he stroked a 2-run single. His 6th hit of the season gave Boston a 5-4 lead.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Boston manager Sergio Garza. "It's usually not just one thing."
